Synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Lochan and sixteen-year-old Maya have always felt more like friends than siblings. Together they have stepped in for their alcoholic, wayward mother to take care of their three younger siblings. As defacto parents to the little ones, Lochan and Maya have had to grow up fast. And the stress of their lives--and the way they understand each other so completely--has also also brought them closer than two siblings would ordinarily be. So close, in fact, that they have fallen in love. Their clandestine romance quickly blooms into deep, desperate love. They know their relationship is wrong and cannot possibly continue. And yet, they cannot stop what feels so incredibly right. As the novel careens toward an explosive and shocking finale, only one thing is certain: a love this devastating has no happy ending.
Thoughts:
This is my second time reading this book, and it was just as beautiful and emotional the second time. I know a lot of people are scared to read this because of the incest topic, but when you're reading about this broken family, you forget they're related at all and soon start rooting for them. I just want to suggest you step out of your comfort zone and give this book a try because the writing is so lyrical and poetic.
The characters are just as amazing as the first time. It crushed me knowing these kids were neglected by both parents and they had to grow up together. It killed me reading about Lochan's character. Lochie is such a raw, real, and emotional character.  Since I'm going into the field of psychology, I think he has bi-polar, depression, social anxiety, and pain attacks. Of course, you never know. But I do know the book states he has social anxiety and get's SUPER bad panic attacks.
The whole book is dark and heavy. It's not an easy read, not because of the brother-sister love, but because of everything them and their siblings have to deal with and go through. There there's a big twist somewhere in the book, and it leaves me so emotionally distraught that I don't know how to function for a free hours after.
